October 31 is looming large. Most trick-or-treaters have picked out their costumes. Pillow cases and plastic pumpkin buckets are out of the closet. And, candy is top of mind!

Here is a roundup of 5 of our most unique Halloween candies for this frightfully fang-tastic event:

1. World’s Largest Gummy Skull
Weighing in at 5 pounds, the World’s Largest Gummy Skull is grossly entertaining. The packaging includes a slot underneath where you can place your own small flashlight to make it glow. You can gift this cranium to friends and family, light it up … and eat it! Also noteworthy: it’s gluten-free.

2. Cauldron of Chocolate Gift Basket

Another great gift idea … especially for those who won’t be trick-or-treating around the neighborhood. Filled with mini Snickers, Milky Way, Hershey’s, Reese’s Cups, and more, this reusable 9 1/4″ x 9 1/4″ x 5″ black cauldron is great for handing out treats next year.

3. Snickers Pumpkins
If you’re a trick-or-treater and you get a Snickers shaped like a pumpkin, it’s highly doubtful you’ll trade it out at the end of the night  … unless you have peanut allergies.

4. Halloween Peeps
Halloween Peeps made our list of Halloween-must have because you can do so much with then. Pop them on top of cakes and cupcakes, insert them into treat bags, place them on a straw to create Peeps pops, string them to make Halloween garland, and, of course, eat them.

5. Fall Pumpkin Gummies
These bulk pumpkin-shaped gummy candies are ideal for Halloween parties because they add lots of seasonal color:  bright orange (orange flavor), yellow (lemon flavor), light orange (black cherry flavor). They’re also perfect for classroom parties and treat bags.

Here’s a holiday treat that’s shiny new and groovy over at Candy.com: Chocolate Dipped Peppermint Ribbon Candy!

There are a couple of reasons why this candy is special.

1. It’s made in the USA (yay!)

2. It’s made by a small family-owned candy company (double yay!)

3. It’s unique. In all of my years in the food industry, I’ve never come across ribbon candy dipped in chocolate. Genius!

4. Each chocolate-covered ribbon candy is sprinkled with candy cane bits to make it presentation-worthy. And each holiday red gift box doesn’t require wrapping, so you’re spared from having to hunt down tape, scissors, paper, ribbon, etc.

This special holiday candy is also one of Candy.com’s “12 Days of Sweet Deals,” so it’s on sale until Tues., Dec. 6. Score!

Halloween Eve Treats 0

It’s night before Halloween, and I’ve got a few curiously compelling chocolate treats for you.

The PRAIM Group, (the company behind the witty Bloomsberry USA chocolate bars) has partnered with artisans Knock Knock and Anne Taintor to create two additional lines of clever chocolate.

The results are entertaining … and will make you look pretty clever should you choose to gift them to friends, family, co-workers, ex’s, etc.

Exhibit A: The No Calorie Dark Chocolate Bar (I’d check “On a Carrot”)

Exhibit B: The Have a Nice, Happy, Merry Bar (this bar truly is one-size-fits-all)

Exhibit C: The I Dream About Milk Chocolate Bar (really, who doesn’t??)

There are plenty more bars where these came from. Click here to browse and buy the collection.

Happy early Halloween!

My ridiculously cool neighbor is watching my kids this summer and asked them to come up with a “Blue Sky List.” Huh?

A Blue Sky List, I found out, is all the things you’d like to do in a summer. Doesn’t that sound divine? And 10X better than a to-do or bucket list?

So, my daughter came up with …

1. nona’s house (Nona is my neighbor’s mom and has a pool. Love Nona.)
2. bowling
3. look at Bull Dogs (Fiberglass bull dogs painted by local artists for auction at end of summer.  They’re pretty cool.)
4. ice cream
5. ride bikes
6. play outside
7. make forts
8. tag
9. movies on rainy days
10. nelson lake (A favorite spot for hikes)
11. go out for lunch
12. put put golf
13. art
14. sleep overs
15. climb trees
16. bike ride

And my son came up with …

1. hockey
2. stick and puck (More hockey. Ouch on the pocketbook.)
3. baseball
4. golf
5. football
6. tag
7. play at pool
8. jump on the tramp (Next-door neighbors have a trampoline that’s been a bit hit)
9. have a good summer
10. eating contest
11. have sleepovers
12. play minute to win it
13. mini golf
14. ride bikes
15. hang out

What’s cool about these lists is that they’re pretty similar to what I would have come up with in the late 1970s when I was 10. (I didn’t know about “Minute to Win It” or have a neighbor with a pool or trampoline, so they’ve one-upped me there.)

All this list-making got me thinking Blue Sky. Here’s what I’ve got on my summer radar:

1. Go to our local outdoor French Market
2. Jump on a train to Chicago with my kids/husband for cultural events, and drag them all to Armitage Ave. boutiques.
3. Walk to our downtown ice cream shop and library, but not in that order
4. Eat Salt Water Taffy (the more chocolate pieces the better)
5. Make S’mores over a campfire, but try out different candy bars, like Ghirardelli, Cadbury, or Ritter Sport bars (maybe even take it a step further and try out different marshmallows, like StrawMallows or chocolate-bottomed Peeps)
6. Swiming, anywhere
7. Write about candy, on my front porch

I’m a simpleton, so if I achieve at least five of these items, I’m calling Summer 2011 bombdiggity.

What’s on your Blue Sky List?
