From a recent Twitter post, I became acquainted with Crummy Gummy, a street artist from Florida who specializes in photographing “life through a gummy bear’s eyes.”

His work causes laughter. I had to find out more.

As luck would have it, Crummy Gummy (the artist goes by that name) graciously agreed to an interview. His behind-the-scenes commentary is just as clever and funny as his artwork. Read on …

 

Candy.com:  How in the world did you start photographing gummy bears?

Crummy Gummy: I had a creative block a few years back and became frustrated with what I was producing, so one day I just forced myself to become creative. I told myself that I would visit a convenience store, find some random items, and try to create something artistic out of it. Gummy bears were one of those items, and I photographed them in four different scenarios that day. I posted them online and within a few days they got almost 1,000 likes. That was the start of all this madness. Good thing I didn’t buy a plunger that day.

 

Candy.com: What’s the hardest gummy bear color to photograph? I’m guessing it’s the clear pineapple.

Crummy Gummy: You would be right. The ‘features’ do not show up so well on camera so I try to avoid that one. Plus, the lack of color bores me. That doesn’t mean I won’t eat a couple, though.

 

Candy.com: What’s your main source of inspiration?

Crummy Gummy: I think, as an artist, you should be open to all sorts of things and situations for inspiration. My photographs are very much based off human interactions, such as drama and suspense, to name a few. However, humor is one of my biggest sources of inspiration. Who doesn’t love to laugh?

 

Candy.com: What’s been your most fun shoot to date?

Crummy Gummy: Well, they [gummy bears] can all be divas at times, but The Prankster Part 1 and 2 would be my favorite, mostly because of the story behind them. On Part 2, the idea was to have the gummy bear hold a lit matchstick about to set off an M-98 that another bear was resting on. I took this photograph at my parents house, and when I went to light the match I accidentally lit the M-98. In a panic, I tossed it away from me, and it flew right behind the sofa where my mom was taking a nap. Let’s just say I learned some new Spanish curse words and almost gave my mom a heart attack.

Candy.com: Do you think you’ll ever photograph any other types of candies?

Crummy Gummy: I have used peeps and jellybeans in some past photos, but you can expect some gummy worms appearing in some photos at my Candyality show in Chicago. (See show info below.)

Candy.com: Gotta ask … What’s your favorite gummy bear color and/or flavor?

Crummy Gummy: Hands down, the green ones. Green’s my favorite color, and they are sooooo yummy. They also seem to be the ones always getting hurt in my photographs. I guess they are like “The Middle Child” in a family to me.

Crummy Gummy is coming to Chicago with a show titled, “Fashion Imposters.” The show is running from August 24 to September 6 at the Candyality candy shop, Water Tower
Place, 875 N. Michigan Ave.

The Meat Dress by Crummy GummyCrummy Gummy’s show hits during Chicago’s Magnificent Mile Fashion Festival, so expect new gummy bear photographs with a fashion/ celebrity twist.

The artist will be at his Fashion Imposters Candyality show on Sat., August 25 at 2 p.m. with free giveaways, signings, new artwork/prints for sale, and, of course, candy.

It’s off to opening day of the National Confectioners Association‘s annual Sweets & Snacks Expo in Chicago. This 3-day sugarlicious industry event is candy heaven. Rows and rows of candy manufacturers display their latest confections to hungry retail buyers from all over the world.

We’ve already got a “hot list” of new products we know we want to to see (and sample!) top o’ the morning, including …

Baby Blue and Pink Gummy Bears
Not sure what’s cooler. The colors or the flavors of these gummy bears. Albanese Confectionery Company‘s translucent Baby Blue Blueberry and Baby Pink Grapefruit Gummy Bears have huge potential for baby showers and weddings. I’m quite sure they’ll live up to expectations.

Sweethearts Marshmallows
Heart-shaped Marshmallow Sweethearts® are headed to love birds everywhere this Valentine’s Day. Just like classic Sweethearts® (Sweethearts is a registered trademark of New England Confectionery Company), the new fluffy, puffy marshmallow hearts will feature sweet nothings like “Hug me,” “Smile,” and “Be Mine.” Manufactured by the Spangler Candy Company, the hearts will come in sweet little 1.6-ounce pink boxes and an assortment of flavors (Strawberry, Grape, Green Apple, and Blue Raspberry). Think of the possibilities for dressing up cupcakes, cookies, cake pops, Rice Krispie Treats, S’mores, ice cream, hot cocoa … oh my!

Astro Pops
Two years after acquiring the retired Astro Pop brand from the Spangler Candy Company, Leaf Brands, LLC is bringing the classic Cherry, Passion Fruit, and Pineapple-flavored rocket pops back to life in two sizes: original 1 oz. for mass merchants, and 1.5 oz. for smaller retailers. To ensure that the 2012 Astro Pop was made exactly the way everyone remembered it—down to the wax and clear wrapper—Leaf Brands enlisted the help of its Facebook friends. Based on product photos, it looks spot on.

In other Leaf Brands news, the company now owns the rights to Bonkers and Wacky Wafers, so be on the lookout for those two classic comebacks in 2013.

 

Justin’s All-Natural Candy Bars
According to Justin’s press info, the company’s new All-natural Candy Bar line (including Milk Chocolate Peanut, Dark Chocolate Peanut, and Milk Chocolate Almond) contains “25% less sugar, 50% more protein, and 100% more fiber than the leading conventional candy bar, Snickers®.” Beyond that, Justin’s “uses only all-natural and organic ingredients, has no hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, preservatives or trans fats, and is also gluten free.”

Um, that’s a mouthful. How can you not be curious enough to give these a road test?

 

DOVE Cookies and Crème Bars and Promises
Coming September 2012: DOVE® Silky Smooth Cookies & Crème Bars and Promises from Mars Chocolate North America. It’s sweet and creamy white chocolate and crunch chocolate cookie bits under the DOVE umbrella. Enough said.

 

Wild Ophelia Candy Bars
Katrina Markoff, the brainchild behind Vosges Haut-Chocolat, has a new venture, Wild Ophelia: Taking an American Road Trip Through Chocolate. Her latest line of exotic dark and milk chocolate bars are smaller than traditional Vosges bars (2 oz. vs. 3 oz.), and less expensive ($4.50-ish vs. $7.50-ish).

Wild Ophelia exhibited at last year’s Sweets & Snacks Expo, but with only five bars. This year, the brand has blossomed into nine bars, including Peanut Butter & Banana, Salted Chowchilla Almond, Smokehouse BBQ Potato Chips, Sweet & Crispy Caramel Corn, Beef Jerky, Southern Hibiscus Peach, New Orleans Chili, Mount Sequoia Granola, and  Sweet Cherry Pecan. BBQ potato chips blended with dark chocolate sounds both disgusting and inviting. Must try!

 

Blue Raspberry and Wild Cherry Bonomo Turkish Taffy
The Warrell Corporation brought Bonomo Turkish Taffy out of retirement two years ago. This year, Warrell is expanding its nostalgic and incredibly chewy (the last time I sampled Bonomo Turkish Taffy, I lost a filling) taffy line with two new flavors: Blue Raspberry and Wild Cherry. Given the popularity of Cherry and Blue Raspberry Airheads, these flavors are a pretty safe bet.

 

Tic Tac Cinnamon Spice
Because I am one of the few humans on the planet who likes “Close-Up Cinnamon Red Gel Toothpaste,” I have a hunch, I’ll like Ferrero U.S.A.‘s new Cinnamon Spice Tic Tacs with “sweet, warm flavor.” They’ve got great color for the holidays and each tiny piece is less than 2 calories. Hello stocking stuffer.

Wedding season is in full bloom—and magnified by the April 29 Royal Wedding.

Word on the bridal beat is that the “it” color for weddings is regal purple. According to TheKnot.com’s recently released 2010 wedding survey, purple was selected by 1 out of 5 brides (21%) for their wedding—up 50% since 2008. Losing popularity with brides is brown, which apparently plummeted 16% last year.

Colored Sixlets are one of Candy.com's most popular wedding candies.

Since purple (especially lavender) is such a hot wedding color and 14% of brides in the TheKnot.com’s survey said they had a candy buffet at their 2010 wedding, I put together a “Purplicious” board at Pinterest.com and filled it with a range of purple candies (see my attempt at a reproduction below).

Perhaps the young royal couple will see the Pinterest board and be inspired to treat their wedding guests to a candy buffet outfitted with All-Natural Lavender Honey Tea Spoons. Purple honey spoons could be the perfect accompaniment to the rumored royal fruitcake. :)
