Joanne MacLennan of Merry Poppins is back on our blog today with a Christmas treat! Her brilliantly colored Ornament Cake Pops are a great addition to cookie baking this weekend.  A perfect project to make with kids of all ages, and a wonderful gift to bring to holiday hosts!

I love decorating my Christmas Tree with the memories of the past.  Each ornament seems to carry with it an emotion locked inside for you to physically touch as you place it on the tree.  This is wondrous to me.  Now that I am a little crazed about small round edible balls, I thought it would be fun to create some ornaments for your table too!

Here’s what you’ll need:

• 1 Cake mix
Candy melts (red and white here)
Lollipop sticks
SweetWorks Sugar pearls, Sixlets, edible glitter, and nonpareils
• Wax paper
• Parchment paper or paper to catch falling glitter
• Flat plate or cookie sheet
• Microwaveable bowls for melting the candy melts
• Spoons
• Small plastic bag with the corner cut out to use as a tip for details, OR a decorating set with various tips
• Styrofoam block to stand sticks while waiting for them to set
• Bowls to catch falling sprinkles and candy

Here’s the how-to:
For the complete directions on how to make a cake pop up to the dipping stage, please refer to my last post on MyCandyCrafts.com , and complete up to the end of step 8.

Below is my basic ring cake pop.  I first made three rings of melts, and then sprinkled them with red nonpariels.  Let this set for a few minutes. Then make three more rings between the red ones and sprinkle with green nonpariels. Then, carefully dip the silver Sixlet into the melted chocolate and set on the top of your cake pop.

This cake pop was dipped, and immediately sprinkled with red edible glitter.  Make sure you sprinkle over a clean sheet of paper for this one.  Once you are done it is easy to bend the paper and let the glitter slide back into the container. Again, complete the cake pop with a silver sixlet on the top.

I love snowflakes!

I first dipped my cake pop in red melts and let it set.  Then, after dumping a spoon of melted candy melts into a small plastic bag and snipping off the tip, I drew little lines crossing each other.  Three to be exact.  Like an X with one more line through it.  Then grab the glitter and sprinkle.  Any mistakes you thought you had will disappear in the sparkles.

I dipped the cake pop in red melts again and let it set.  Using my little plastic bag with melts in it, I drew a line from the top of the cake pop to the bottom, and came right back up a little but away from my first line.  Then I filled in the space with melts and quickly sprinkled with gold edible glitter.  Continue around the ball until it is complete.

Oh!  And don’t forget the silver Sixlet on the top!

This green striped cake pop was done the same way as the red and gold ball, but I dipped it in white melts, and then never filled in the spaces that were left between the lines I drew from the top to the bottom.  I love this one.

Top off with a silver Sixlet.

Time to clean up!  Being creative in my house means there is a mess at the end.  ;)

Jelly Belly Jelly Bean Petal Cake Pops

Our favorite cake pop designer, Joanne MacLennan of Merry Poppins, is back on the blog today with another gorgeous candy creation. This time, she’s incorporating vibrant red, green, yellow, and orange Jelly Belly jelly beans as the petals on her flowery pops and finishing them off with candy pearls and edible glitter. Perfect for fall parties!

Here’s what you’ll need …

• 1 Cake mix
• Homemade or store bought frosting
• Candy melts
• Lollipop sticks
• SweetWorks Sugar Pearls and Sixlets, Edible Glitter, Non-Pareils
• Jelly Belly Sour Mix Jelly Beans
• Wax paper
• Parchment paper to catch falling glitter
• Flat plate or cookie sheet
• Microwaveable bowls for melting the candy melts
• Spoons
• Small plastic bag with the corner cut out to use as a tip for details, OR a decorating set with various tips.
• Styrofoam block to stand sticks while waiting for them to set
• Bowls to catch falling sprinkles and candy

 

Merry Poppins Jelly Belly Cake Pop Ingredients

Here’s the how-to
For the complete directions on how to make a cake pop up to the dipping stage, please refer to my last post on MyCandyCrafts.com , and complete up to the end of step 8.

Once the cake pop is completely covered with melted chocolate, tap off the extra, and set the dipped cake pop upside down on the wax paper until set.  This will leave the cake pop with a flat top to build the flower.

I made the same rings around the cake pops as in post 1, and sprinkled the rings with white non-pareils.

Nonpareil Swirls

 Set the cake pop again upside down until set. Using a spoon or small plastic bag with the tip snipped off, cover the top of the cake pop with melted chocolate.

Piping White Chocolate

Place the Jelly Belly’s on the edge of the flat top of the cake pop, and continue all the way around until the flower petals are complete.  Set aside.

I always have a plan, but sometimes have to add something new at the last minute!  I changed my mind and needed orange sugar pearls.  They look smashing with the bright yellow Jelly Belly’s.

SweetWorks Orange Candy Pearls

Dip your spoon into the melts and drop a little into the center of the flower to fill in the middle.   There is nothing yummier than more chocolate.   Can you ever have enough?  Mmmm.

Drizzling White Chocolate

Quickly drop the sugar pearls onto the chocolate in the center before it sets.  Make sure a larger bowl is under your hand to catch the falling treats.

Candy Pearl Centers

With a toothpick or lollipop stick, drop a small amount of chocolate into the middle of the sugar pearls and place a larger candy on top.  Hold until set.

Place a piece of parchment paper under you now as you sprinkle the middle of the flower with edible glitter.  It is really messy, so go slow.  Tap off any excess glitter.  A clean paintbrush may also be useful to brush off any extra glitter.

One cake pop on its own is sharp, but when placed in a group with friends it is stunning.  Show them off with some cool candies in the bottom of a jar or bottle and let the “Oohs” and “Ahhs” begin!

Sunflower Candy Cake Pops

Sunflowers represent fall in my mind.  The tall stocks and bright yellow petals are stunning.  Ever spend hours as a kid picking out the seeds in the middle?  Bring the sunflower field to your table with these sunflower cake pops that are sure to bring a smile to your guests!

Here’s what you’ll need:

• One Cake mix
• Homemade or store-bought frosting
• Candy melts
• Lollipop sticks
• Nonpareils, sugar pearls, and edible glitter
Egg Nog Candy Corn (with the tips broken off)
• Wax paper
• Flat plate or cookie sheet
• Microwaveable bowls for melting the candy melts
• Spoons
• Small plastic bag with the corner cut out to use as a tip for details, OR a    decorating set with various tips
• Styrofoam block to stand sticks while waiting for cake pops to set
• Bowls to catch falling sprinkles

 

Here’s the how-to:

Before you start dipping your cake pops, break off the first little end of the candy corn.

Once the cake pop is completely covered with melted chocolate, tap off the extra, and tip the cake pop to the side.   Place the first candy corn about ¾ of the way from the bottom of the cake pop, and hold it in place until it stays.  DO NOT let yourself be in a hurry with these guys.

Place the next candy right beside the first; hold it there a moment, and then repeat until you have gone all the way around.  The candy corn are heavy, so GO SLOW.  They want to slide right off the pop and land your lap.  I promise.

Your chocolate on the cake pop will set before you complete the circle.  Just dip the broken end into the melts and place it on the pop, again holding it for a moment.

Once you complete the circle of candy corn, place your cake pop in your stand to set and start another one.  Once I finish all the flowers with the candy corn I go back and do all of the flower centers.

For the centers I made several designs.  First, slightly warm the melts in the microwave.  I used a small plastic bag and dropped a few tablespoons of chocolate into the corner.  By snipping just a little bit off the corner of the bag, I have now created a tip that will control the amount of melt that comes out.   I love this part!

On the top of the flower I made rings of chocolate around the inside edge, and then sprinkled them with black non-pareils.  If you are going to make a center with more than one candy, do one section at a time so that the candies do not spread onto a section where you do not want them to be.  Any mistakes you think you made with the chocolate will magically disappear once you sprinkle on the edible glitter or other candies.

Then I warmed my melts again, dropping some into my small bag, and did some swirls and zig zags on the bottoms of the cake pops.  You can practice on wax paper first if you have an idea in mind.

Then when you are done practicing, the melts will set and anyone hanging around can eat your work, or you can re-melt your chocolate and use it again.

A few weeks ago, a colleague at Candy.com told me about a Southern California-based event planner who has created candy buffets for Oprah, the Emmy Awards, American Idol, celebrity weddings, etc.

This inquiring mind had to find out: Who is this confectionery Wonder Woman?

Turns out, it’s Jackie Sorkin—and she really is Wonder Woman (step aside Lynda Carter). Jackie is the founder of Custom Candy Buffet Bars and Southern California Wedding Planner. On top of that, she’s a heavy-duty blogger, brand new mom, and soon-to-be star of a TV series about her candy catering empire. (Note to self: Do not let the kids read this because they will think you are a slacker.)

Jackie kindly agreed to chat with Candy.com to get the straight dope on her booming Custom Candy Buffet Bars business in Hollywood.

Buckle in …

Candy.com: I know your Custom Candy Buffet Bar business launched after years of event planning in New York City and Los Angeles. What was the light bulb moment that led you to candy?

Jackie: I love things that are pretty and candy certainly is that! I began creating custom candy creations for clients events and they were received so well that I thought, “There is something to this candy thing.” Then I began doing more and more event shows and expos and, since I am so competitive, I wanted all the attendees at my booth chatting with ME! So, I created some really great Custom Candy Buffet Bars and just like that, I WON! My booths were always swamped with guests and people flipped for my candy.

Candy.com: On your blog, “The Fabulous Fun Adventures of Jackie Sorkin & The Hollywood Candy Girls,” you talk a lot about your sweet entourage. How do the Candy Girls fit into your business?

Jackie: My Candy Girls are my six lil’ sisters. The girls and I are like a family and they are a major part of my business. They are very well recognized in Hollywood since we do so many events there. Paparazzi can’t get enough of them either. They love to stage shots of the girls with celebrities and our candy. The Candy Girls are fabulously fun and assist in creating our events, assist clients at events with their candy, and, if that weren’t all, the girls are total Eye Candy themselves. They always bring a little extra sugar and spice to our events not to mention the mischief we find ourselves getting into every now and then. Jessica is our assistant and handles lots of the important details, too. We’d be so lost without  her.

Candy.com: Since you and the girls brush with fame quite often during your high-profile events, do you have any scoop on celebrities’ favorite candy?

Jackie: Yes of course! We know that Oprah‘s best friend Gayle King likes gummy candy, and sweet and sour stuff. Mega producer Diane Warren LOVES Good & Plenty, Paris Hilton loves anything sweet and flipped for our Candy Ka-bobs!

Candy.com: What’s the most over-the-top candy buffet/bar you’ve created so far?

Jackie: We created a fabulous custom candy buffet bar for the 2010 Emmy Awards recently, which was a huge hit. Everything we do is totally customized so you always get something new. Our designs range from cute and funky, to whimsical and retro, to clean, modern and elegant. It just depends on the client’s candy vision.

Candy.com: Any particular candies that seem to be a hit at most any event?

Jackie: Gummy candy and sours, or chocolate.

Candy.com: What’s your favorite candy? (We had to ask.)

Jackie: Ummm, kind of hard to answer but I’ll say … jelly beans (the old school kind).

Candy.com: I understand you could be reality star Bethenny Frankel’s long lost sister (the sister she doesn’t know exists … yet). What characteristics do you share with Ms. Frankel?

Jackie: I LalaLOVE Bethenny Frankel to the 1000 trillionth power. I could answer this question for days and it’s my fave question from you. Well, what we have in common is an insane work ethic, the desire to succeed in such a major way, and the endless efforts we expel to grow our companies. I also just had my first baby who, like Bethenny’s baby Bryn Hoppy, was also a surprise. My daughter’s name is Isabella. (She is the heiress to the candy empire and she is totally delicious).

I have an amazing husband who really gets me and has the patience of a saint, but I’m sure he also looks at me some days and thinks, “Babe, you are so nuts. Chill out!” Bethenny is hysterical and pure personality, yet she is vulnerable and so real. Anyone who knows me personally knows that I embody the same qualities and I make no excuses for who I am. My favorite thing about myself is that I keep it real and always will. I say what I think, I believe really hard work pays off, and I dream BIG. Really BIG! I think life is short so I make it sweet and fun.

Candy.com: What’s the next “Fabulous Fun Adventure” for Jackie Sorkin?

Jackie: What’s next for us, WOW! What isn’t? I mean we have 101 things going on at once it makes my head spin like a whirly pop. What our friends, fans, and clients can look forward to is a reality show based on our crazy candy business to launch on a major network as well as the opening of our retail store; franchising our candy buffet and candy catering business; more and more clients and major events; perhaps planning a proper wedding for my husband and I since we never got to experience one but we totally deserve a super mega-fun party; partnerships with major players in the world of candy; and hopefully getting to create something for the cutest girls in town: the Obama girls, Sasha and Malia.
